Research on NMN

Sirtuins were formerly proteins whose functions were largely unknown, until many researchers began studying them, and it is now known that SIRT1, one of the seven types of sirtuins, regulates the metabolism of the liver, pancreas, skeletal muscles, and other organs important for regulating the metabolism of incoming nutrients.

Experiments by Washington University conducted on mice have shown that by simply increasing the amount of SIRT1 in the brain through genetic engineering, it is possible to restore functions of the brain from its youthful state.

The human body has a synthetic pathway that converts nicotinamide to NMN, then NMN to NAD. By using this NAD in particular, it has the effect of activating the nerve cells and restoring various functions of the body.

NAMPT circulating in the bloodstream activates the synthesis of NMN and NAD.

Stuides have also found that NAMPT (nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase), an enzyme for NAD+ synthesis that is secreted into the blood from adipose (fatty) tissue, plays a very important role in activating the synthesis of NAD from NMN in the body.

Furthermore, this enzyme alone cannot pass through the “Brain barrier” to enter the brain, but it has been proven that NMN can actually enter the brain. These findings suggest that NAMPT may be an effective anti-ageing approach to prevent functional defects of organs and tissues due to ageing, thus extending lifespan.
